Kurli

Option two

Buying the featured slot in a hair-type category

One brand per category at a time, booked by the month, labelled as paid on the page. It buys position in the product list and nothing else.

Kurli sells a featured product slot for one hair-type category at a time, such as curly, coily, or wavy. The brand holding the slot is the first product shown to users Kurli reads as that texture. It is booked by the month, one brand per category, and the slot carries a visible Paid placement label. It buys position in the product list. It does not buy hairstyle advice, review wording, or removal of the label. Rates are quoted per enquiry at hello@kurli.me.

What a slot actually is

When Kurli builds a maintenance routine for a user, the routine names categories: a cleanser, a conditioner, a styler, something to finish, and a tool. Each category shows product options.

The featured slot is the first option in a category, for one texture. A brand holding the curly styler slot is the first styler shown to a user Kurli read as curly. Everyone else in that category still appears. The slot is position, not exclusivity of the whole page.

The categories that can be bought are the hair types Kurli distinguishes: curly, coily, wavy, straight, fine or thinning, and thick or coarse. You can hold more than one, but each is booked separately, and we will push back if your product does not genuinely suit one you are trying to buy.

One brand per category, and why

We do not stack three competing brands into the same paid slot and rotate them. If you book the coily styler slot for a month, you are not sharing it with two other coily stylers.

The reason is partly that a rotating paid slot is worth much less to the buyer, and partly that it is hard to label honestly. If three brands paid for the same position, a reader seeing one of them has no way to understand what they are looking at.

The practical effect is that categories sell out. If the curly slot is taken, we will tell you it is taken and when it frees up, rather than inventing a second curly slot to take your money.

What paid placement does not buy

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is where expectations usually break.

It does not buy hairstyle advice. No brand can pay to change which haircut Kurli recommends to a user. That is the reason people use the site, and selling it would end the value of everything else on this page.

It does not buy a review verdict. If you also want a review, that is product seeding, and the finding is whatever the finding is.

It does not buy removal of the label. The Paid placement label stays, at a size a reader can actually see.

It does not buy a claim we cannot support. Copy in the slot is yours to write, but we review it, and we will not publish a performance claim that we would have to stand behind and cannot check.

It does not buy suppression of a competitor. Holding a slot means you are first. It does not mean rivals are removed from the category.

Labelling, and the rule behind it

A bought slot is labelled on the slot itself, not only in a policy page nobody opens. The affiliate disclosure then explains the arrangement in full.

This follows the FTC's endorsement guides. Under 16 CFR 255.5, a connection between the seller and the endorser that might materially affect the weight or credibility a reader gives the endorsement, and that the audience would not reasonably expect, has to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Money paid for position in a recommendation is that kind of connection.

There is also a search-side reason. Google's structured data policies tell publishers not to include undisclosed incentivised reviews in content or in markup. Labelling paid content properly is the difference between a page that keeps its rich results and one that quietly loses them.

Booking, rates, and ending it

Rates are quoted per enquiry. We do not publish a rate card, because the honest rate depends on the category, the period, and what is already booked, and a published number we then negotiate away is just a worse version of a conversation.

Tell us your budget in the enquiry. Starting from your number is faster than three rounds of guessing at it.

Bookings run by the month. At the end of a booked period you can stop with no argument and no retention call. If a placement is not paying for itself, we would rather you leave and come back later with a better-matched product than renew something that is not working.

How to tell whether placement is the right option for you

Placement suits a brand with one strong product for one texture, a launch that needs concentrated attention, or a category position you want to hold before a competitor does.

It suits you less if you have not tested how this audience responds to your product at all. In that case start with affiliate, which costs nothing up front, look at the click data by hair type, and buy placement in the category the data supports.

And if what you actually need is for people to understand why your product is different, a seeded review does that better than a slot with two lines of copy.

Questions

Questions brands ask

What is a featured placement on Kurli?

It is the first product slot in a category for one hair type, such as the curly styler slot. The brand holding it is the first product shown to users Kurli reads as that texture. Other products still appear in the category.

Which categories can be bought?

The hair types Kurli distinguishes: curly, coily, wavy, straight, fine or thinning, and thick or coarse. Each is booked separately, and we will push back if your product does not genuinely suit one you are trying to buy.

Do you rotate several paying brands through the same slot?

No. One brand per category at a time. A rotating paid slot is worth less to the buyer and is much harder to label honestly, since a reader would have no way of knowing which of several payers they were looking at.

Can paid placement change the hairstyle advice?

No, at any price. No brand can pay to change which haircut a user is recommended. That advice is the reason people use the site, so it is not for sale.

Can I have the Paid placement label removed or made smaller?

No. The label stays, at a size a reader can see. It follows the FTC endorsement guides on disclosing a material connection, and Google's structured data policies also warn publishers against undisclosed incentivised content.

Does holding a slot remove my competitors from the category?

No. It means you are first in that category, not that rivals are taken out of it. Suppressing competitors is not something the slot buys.

How much does it cost?

It is a flat monthly fee quoted per enquiry. We do not publish a rate card, because the honest rate depends on the category, the period, and what is already booked. Tell us your budget and we will answer plainly.

What if the category I want is already booked?

We will tell you it is taken and when it is next free. We will not invent a second slot in the same category to take the booking.

How do I end a placement?

At the end of any booked month. There is no retention call and no argument. If it is not paying for itself we would rather you stop.

Should I start with placement or with affiliate?

Start with affiliate if you have never tested this audience. It costs nothing up front, and the click data by hair type tells you which category is worth buying. Buying placement first means guessing at the category.
