Is air drying better than blow drying? The honest answer

Heat damages the outside of your hair. Staying wet for hours damages the inside. Both statements have evidence behind them, which is why this question has no clean winner and why the pages that declare one are skipping something.
The short version: do neither at the extreme. Take the water out with a towel, let the hair dry partly on its own, then finish with low heat held at a distance and kept moving. That middle is supported by both sides of the argument, and the rest of this post explains why each end of it is a problem.
What heat does to the outside
The American Academy of Dermatology puts heat styling on its list of habits that damage hair, and its advice there is to let hair air dry when possible, to use the lowest heat setting when you do use a tool, and to use heat tools less often, aiming for once a week or less.
Its tips for healthy hair adds the practical version: low or medium heat settings, plus a product that protects the hair from heat. And its styling guidance says cutting the number of times per week you blow dry limits damage on its own.
What the heat is doing is lifting and cracking the outer surface of the hair, the overlapping layer that makes hair feel smooth and reflect light. Once that layer is rough, the hair tangles more, holds less water, and looks dull. The full picture of that process is in heat damage and heat protection.
That part is not controversial. Nobody argues that 200 degrees is good for hair.
What staying wet does to the inside
The other half gets far less attention.
The review Hair Cosmetics: An Overview in the International Journal of Trichology describes water absorption swelling the hair shaft, and names the repeated cycle of swelling and drying as something that can damage hair.
Inside the hair there is a layer called the cell membrane complex. It is the material that holds the hair's internal structure together, and it is the part that water reaches. The 2011 study Hair Shaft Damage from Heat and Drying Time of Hair Dryer in Annals of Dermatology reported that this layer can be damaged when it is in contact with water for prolonged periods, and that longer contact with water might be more harmful to it than the temperature of drying.
That is the sentence that turned the air-drying advice on its head, and it is worth reading what produced it before repeating it.
The study people quote, and what it actually tested
The researchers took chemically untreated hair, 20 cm long, in 2 g bundles. They put it through 30 rounds of shampooing and drying, one a day for 30 days, and compared five groups: untouched hair, hair dried on its own at room temperature, and three dryer settings at measured distances. The gentlest dryer setting was 60 seconds at 15 cm away, which measured 47 degrees at the hair. The harshest was 15 seconds at 5 cm, which measured 95 degrees.
Their conclusion, in their own words: although using a hair dryer causes more surface damage than natural drying, using a hair dryer at a distance of 15 cm with continuous motion causes less damage than drying hair naturally.
Both halves of that sentence matter. The dryer did more damage to the surface. The dryer did less damage in total, because the hair spent less time wet.
Why that result is not a licence to blow dry
We think this study is worth knowing about and we would not build a routine on it alone. Three honest limits.
It was run on hair bundles in a laboratory, not on people's heads. Detached hair has no scalp feeding it oil, and it is not being combed, slept on or tied back between washes.
It is one study, with one dryer model, on one hair type, at one set of distances. Nobody has repeated it at that level of detail as far as we can find.
The author list includes a dermatology department at Yonsei University and a research laboratory belonging to a cosmetics company. That does not make the result wrong. It is the kind of thing you should know before you treat a single paper as settled.
What we take from it is narrower than the headline: the length of time hair spends wet is a real variable, not a neutral one, and a dryer used carefully is not the villain it is usually painted as.
The middle that both sides support
Neither the AAD's advice nor the study argues against this sequence.
Squeeze the water out with a towel or a cotton t-shirt first. The AAD says to wrap the hair to absorb water rather than rubbing it. This step is free, costs no heat, and removes the water that would otherwise take the longest to leave.
Let the hair dry partly on its own. The AAD specifically suggests allowing hair to partially air dry before you style or comb it. This takes out the stretch of time where a dryer would be working hardest.
Then finish with heat, low setting, the dryer about 15 cm from your head, moving the whole time. Fifteen centimetres is roughly the length of a hand from wrist to fingertip, which is an easier measure in a bathroom than a ruler. Moving matters as much as distance: a dryer held still cooks one spot.

How long is too long to stay wet
There is no published threshold we can point to, and any page that gives you an exact number of minutes is inventing it.
What we would use as a practical marker: the scalp should not still be wet at bedtime, and hair should not still be wet two hours after a wash if you can help it. Those are judgements, not findings, and we would rather say so than dress them up.
Hair that takes the longest to dry is the hair with the most to gain from the middle route. That usually means thick hair, long hair, and low porosity hair, where a tight flat surface slows water going in and coming out. The four minutes, step by step
The finishing pass is short enough that people skip the technique and then wonder why it did not help.
Split the hair into four sections and clip three of them out of the way. Start with the back, because it is the section you reach worst and you should reach it while your arm is fresh.
Point the airflow down the length of the hair rather than up into it. Air moving from root to end lies the outer surface flat. Air blown upward lifts it, which is where half of the frizz people blame on their dryer comes from. Keep the dryer moving in a slow sweep, never resting on one spot. A hand's length from wrist to fingertip is close enough to 15 cm to work with in a bathroom.
Finish each section with the cool button for about twenty seconds while the section is held in the shape you want. Hair holds the position it was in as it cooled, which is why a blow dry that drops out within an hour was usually released while it was still warm.
How often matters more than how hot
The AAD's advice on frequency is the part that goes unread. It suggests using heat tools once a week or less, and says cutting the number of times per week you blow dry limits damage on its own.
That is a different lever from temperature, and for most people it is the easier one. Two full blow dries a week and five air-dried days does less harm than seven careful low-heat dries. If your hair only needs to look styled on certain days, those are the days to spend the heat on.
By hair type
Fine straight hair dries fast on its own and gains little from heat. Air dry it, and use two minutes at the roots only if you want lift.
Thick hair holds water for hours. This is the type where the drying-time argument carries the most weight, and where a low-heat finish is worth doing.

Colour treated hair has already had its surface opened by processing. Treat it as one step more fragile than its natural texture, use a heat protectant, and keep the temperature down.
The things people blame on the wrong cause
Frizz after air drying usually comes from the towel, not from the air. Rubbing lifts the surface, and a lifted surface catches on itself. Wrap and squeeze, put your product on while the hair is soaking, then leave it alone.
Flat, greasy-looking roots after air drying come from the hair drying under its own weight against the scalp. That is a shape problem and two minutes of low heat at the roots fixes it.
Cold air does not dry hair faster than warm air. Warm air holds more water vapour. The cool button on a dryer is for setting a shape once the section is already dry, because hair holds the position it was in as it cools.
